2.0L head on a 1.8L

Post by Rebelsnavy »

I'm curious if this can be done? Will a 2.0L cylinder head seat properly on a 1.8L motor? Could I possibly bolt my 1.8L cam towers/manifolds onto the cylinder head without a hitch? Will I need new tappets and shims? Are there any issues with fitting a timing belt at that point? As far as teeth count? Will I need new cylinder head bolts? Would my engine still be an interfering engine at that point?

My 1.8L cylinder head got pounded beyond repair by a broken exhaust valve, after a timing belt failure (the valve literally snapped in half and crunched its way through #4 piston as well) anyway I have located an affordable 2.0L cylinder head and am looking for any insight or advice on what I plan to do. Which is make it work with my 1.8L stock motor with 77' 32/34 adfa carb intake / exhaust manifolds. All advice appreciated! Let the good times roll.

The heads are interchangeable, camboxes etc will bolt on, standard 1800 belt. The valve clearances will need setting with the correct shims.

The 2 Ltr head has a larger combustion chamber so the compression ratio will drop from 8.0 (US SPEC ENGINE) to around 7.6 with a resulting loss in power for the engine. I you use this head you would need to install higher compression pistons in order to get compression back to a reasonable level.

Mick, Stan, thank you so much for the advice! Any idea on the shim size(s) I may need? Is there a formula or do I just measure for clearance and swap until I get it?

Would Pistons along these lines be to ambitious?
Compression height is stock. Although I'm trying to wrap my head around high compression Pistons, does the piston pertrud 8mm above the block @ Tdc because of its 8mm dome? If so, I'm trying to comprehend accounting for this when making valve adjustments.

Using this formula I found on Google ratio becomes 7.2 with 2.0L head on 1.8Lblock, so with high compression Pistons with the 8mm dome and the 2.1 increase would compression roughly be 9.3?

The dome protrudes into the combustion chamber, the piston still only comes to the top of the bore. Valve clearances are measured, the shim is removed and measured, then a thicker or thinner shim is fitted to get the desired clearance. Correctly timed cams are only slightly open at TDC on overlap, but get it wrong and you'll be rebuilding again. You can't look at a set of pistons and say what the compression will be, everything has to be measured and calculated to get an accurate figure.
