1979 Fiat Spider 124

Post by tonym »

Greetings! Just bought my first Fiat Spider that's been sitting in a carport in Florida for 6 years, in sad shape. But... almost no rust, engine not locked up and almost everything is there. Except they lost all of the keys. Looks like I can get the ignition key made from the code on the firewall or under the ignition cap but how do I find out the codes for the door and trunk keys?

Hi tonym,

Lots of threads on here about keys. As I recall, the doors and trunk are difficult to get if you have nothing to start from. If the trunk is closed, I think you can take the rear license plate off and do something to unlock the trunk. Drill a hole? If you search, you'll find that here somewhere. I never bother locking my doors, as it just means someone will slice the top to look inside my car. I leave nothing of value in it.
Welcome aboard!

Thanks Kirk. Did see that trunk solution. Leaving that as last resort, will at least get the ignition key from the code.

Good luck finding a key code. The factory didn't keep track so not sure how anyone can use that...

My method is to pull the column and drill out the old ignition switch.

My locksmith in Houston can make keys from the code behind theface plate on the Sipea ignition switches. He has a book or computer program that tells him how to set up his cutting machine. He has done several for me.

Thanks all. keys4classics is making the ignition key from the code under the ignition cap and my local locksmith has the glove box cylinder and is pretty confident he can make that key. We'll see if it works for doors and trunk.
