Starter Woes

Post by jaubine »

So I tried starting up my '79 Spider 2000 this morning to hear a strange sound coming from the starter motor.. it will get barely a full turnover on the engine before it sounds like the starter gear is disengaging and spinning freely... I havent pulled the starter yet (that looks like a chore in of itself), but wanted to know if anyone thought this might be damaged selinoid, or starter gear, or what... it makes for a bear to try and start a cold engine...

sounds like you have a weak drive unit in the starter. Removal is required for repair. I'd find a local rebuilder and have them go through the starter while it's out

Just outta curiosity, are the starters pretty universal in terms of bolt-on fit and functionality across the range of years the car was in production? Not sure if the hassle of waiting for mine to be rebuilt/repaired is worth keeping the car off the road if I can find another starter for a reasonable price... Just want to be sure though before I start looking...
