'71 Brake booster removal?

Post by Homegrown »

Hello all:
I'm making slow, painful progress on bringing the '71 Fiat back to life. I'm learning that Audis are not the most difficult designs afterall.
After pulling the calipers, I moved on to the brake booster. The bolts and pedal pin came out easily, but I cannot determine how to remove the brake booster past the cable (speedometer cable?). The cable is very rigid and sneaking it past does not appear to be an option. The DIY online do not show a stiff cable blocking the booster. Was this specific to early Fiat Spiders?

Any advice?

Apparently I am not the only person to shear off a stud from the inner control arm bushing support either... I didnt want to use heat on the stud so close to the engine (or rubber bushing) and regretting it now.

That is your clutch cable. I had to undue it down at the clutch fork to get mine out.
It is a PITA if the cable comes off the clutch pedal inside car. My son is pretty good at putting it back on now but I am not.

I would not just replace it to replace it. I think you can pretty well tell if the diaphragm is leaking - from what I have heard.
I still have my original.
I just changed out the brake fluid and changed out the rubber hose lines.

Thanks for the input John. I even said to my father that maybe we should just try it because of the difficulty in removing.
I finished his Mustang conv last fall and after 25+ years of sitting in a shed, the Mustang's booster leaked vacuum badly. I just assumed that they were parked next to one another and ...birds of a feather...
