I have a 1979 2000 with factory automatic that has been in the family since 1980. Not being too impressed with the power I am swapping to a 1975 carb and manifold at the same time as I am converting the car to the much more appropriate 5 speed.
Can someone please explain the purpose of the fast idle control system and if it is worthwhile trying to have it functional? I see that there is a switch on the trans (that only engages in 3rd and 4th gear, another switch at the clutch pedal and finally a test switch (which I do not plan on installing).
I did a search and find bits and pieces about the system but don’t understand its purpose.
Many thanks in advance.

Re: Fast Idle Control System
It was an emissions related solution. When activated, the fast idle system set the idle speed higher to reduce emissions when you shifted between 3rd and 4th gear.
