Fuel injector ethanol

Post by tima01864 »

I have just had them cleaned and flow tested. The Injector Service informed me that Ethanol kills these injectors they corrode internally and need to be protected. He strongly suggested Red Line SL-1 3oz per full tank. Anyone use this? The injectors look really fine now, good job.

I'm not sure if an additive will protect all the bits that are not designed to have ethanol run through them when a car sits. I've read that ethanol is more likely to separate in 90 to 180 days. The separation can cause damage in cars that sit for some time. I would make sure the car is turned over and driven at least once a month. Additive should be put in if you live in a humid climate and the car sits for some period of time.

I've been using Startron (Soltron in the old days) for a number of years. Originally in a twin Diesel boat and now in my 124. Diesel has a big problem with water in the fuel. Not only does cause problems (with the injectors as noted above) but the intersection of the water and the diesel is where a lot of "bugs" like to make babies. When you get too many babies they tend to die off and clog the fuel filters. (BoiGuard will only make the problem worse if there is already a lot of bugs in the tank. It's time for a cleaning ) On diesel boats large fuel filters are used. These filters also separate the fuel from the water. Water is heaver the fuel so the water ends up (hopefully) on the bottom of the fuel filter bowl. Periodic draining of the filter bowl removes any water that finds it's way to the filter. In all the years running the boat and burning many barrels of fuel, I have never found any water in the bottom of the bowls. I'm thinking it was because I always added Startron (and some Mystery Oil) to the fuel.

Now that there is Ethanol in gas, there is an additional problem The Ethanol attracts water moisture and will corrode the injectors. (the water does the dirty deed not the Ethanol)

It's my understanding that the enzymes in Startron some how break down the water to the point that it's mixed/suspended with the fuel and is burned along with the fuel.

Take a look at this discussion for more info/thoughts.

I found a gas station near me (two miles away) that sells ethanol free gas. It costs me about $4 per gallon for premium, but it's cheap insurance. Here's a link to see if you can find ethanol-free fuel near you:
