I have been collecting the 50 states auto license plates for some years now . I got my first one other than Oregon and Washington when I was in Kodiak Alaska at the city dump back in 1967 after the big earth quake they had there in 1964..
I know I could buy them off the internet but I rather just by chance find them and that way they have more meaning to me and also the people who I get them from.
Some of the places I have found them are ,,junk yards on vacation , garage sales, local tavern, word of mouth , craigs list auto forum, and just people who see them hanging in my shop .
I write notes about each one i get to where I got it from . I don't care what year they are ,,but I do like nice readable ones that aren't rusty..
I have many Oregon and Washinton ones to trade if any one is into collecting plates and would be glad to exchange either of these two states for the states I need to complete the set . I would be glad to pay a fair price for any I get from any of you as I do not think I will be traveling to any place where I might find the rest of my collection. And being retired I notice that the wall is not complete where I hang them in my shop. LOL ,,,papa
This is a list of the ones I still have not found .
Connecticut
Delaware
Louisana
Maine
Mississippi
Nebraska
New Jersey
Rhode Island
Vermont
West Virginia
License Plate Collection
Re: License Plate Collection
looks like you need to schedule a nice long vacation to the right hand coast of our great nation!! Maine lobster sounds mighty fine...
Here is my favorite. Took me nearly a year to find it, and all the "eggsperts" said it didn't exist. ended up with an uncirculated matched set. it is legally registered to my wife's Spider, cost me under $30 delivered for the pristine pair.

It's really a neat one and congrats on the find.. I only collect the plain ones and only have one form North Dakota that is unusual but It's still not as neat as the one you have here , thanks for the look .. papambouse wrote:looks like you need to schedule a nice long vacation to the right hand coast of our great nation!! Re: License Plate Collection
Hey Mike,
You were right, I called the Sec. of State and they said that I half to have the 80 sticker for the 79 plate. Found a new uncirc. 80 sticker for a couple of $.
Where is the Great Lake State logo on the bottom of the plate?

Re: License Plate Collection
now you are catching me in a gray area for my history knowledge... however, michigan has practiced revolving slogans over the years. Great Lakes State was just one slogan. I know it was used in '79, and was not used in '76.
that '78 plate in my picture was a specialty plate. I am not sure that someone did not bend the rule, or ignore it when it was approved for my use. specialty plates did not alway have the slogans stamped on them. I am covering nothing on this plate.
the bi-centennial 1976 plates had no slogan, just a 76 stamped in the lower left corner, and some embossed flag furls across the bottom.
the 1980 Dealer plate that i have does not have a slogan, MICHIGAN is at the top across the center...and two lines replace the slogan across the bottom "Dealer Plate" "Expires Feb 1981"
the '79 plates i have say "Great Lake State" two lines across the bottom, centered. i will send you a picture.
the slogan i like to refer to the most was popular in the 60's "Winter Wonderland"
where did you find the uncirculated sticker? I'd like to get my hands on one as well..... incase i change my mind about using the '79 plate. sure makes economic sense.. $35 one time verses $29 every year.

Re: License Plate Collection
I have my original '79 plate with Great Lakes State on it, and just bought an 80 sticker for it.
