Ignition set up 1608 dual idf40

Post by dutchspiderrider »

Hello,

My BS1 had a 1438cc engine with distributor mounted on the engine block. I changed the engine to a 1608cc with dual idf40. This engine has a Marelli S144 distributor mounted on the exhaust cam side. It has no vacuum advance. We connected it to the coil that was in the car.

Question now is how to go about setting it all up, mainly the advance without vacuum.
Am I using the right set-up or do I need another component like a Marelli PLEX.

Open to all suggestions!

Hi there,

I have the same distributor/coil setup in my 1975 1800 spider, also running dual IDFs. It should have centrifugal advance (on the order of 20 degrees if memory serves). I set mine up using a timing light off of the #4 spark plug. You should be able to time the engine using the timing mark on the harmonic crank balancer and graduated marks on the timing cover. I set my timing at 10 degrees, which correlates to the upper mark on the timing cover.

On a side note, make sure you have clean plugs. When I installed the IDF's my 0-60 went from 18 to 25 sec. Plugs were so bad that the increased fuel couldn't burn. New plugs brought it to 12.

I have the same setup. Centrifugal advance works just fine.
