timing cover and fuel pump question

Post by warrenrhen »

OK I'm new to this car and this forum, so I have some simple questions. First the timing belt cover. I have the front of the cover off anf the back side of it on the passenger side off but something is holding the driver side off. My other question is about the left (driver side) of the block. What appears to be a fuel pump. Gass lines going to and from. Is this a fuel pump or just a storage unit to keep fuel from flowing back to the tank. I'll obviously have many more questions later. Thanks
Cheers,
Warren

Are you talking about the yellow plastic cover? There are just 3 or 4 long bolts holding it down. You should be able to see them. One is way down on the driver side.

The mechanical fuel pump is mounted on the block on the left side.

Thanks for the tip on the mechanical full pump. I wasn't sure they had one. I read somewhere that they had a one way valve or holding canister to keep the from from running away from the carb causing hard starting. As for the cam belt cover. I have the yellow part off the front of the cam pulleys. I also have the black backside of the cover off the right side but the one on the left doesn't want to come off. How many bolts should be holding that on?

On the question of a one-way valve or holding canister, you may be thinking of the vapor canister, which is used to capture gas vapors from the carb and the gas tank, and then bleed them back into the intake rather than just vent them to the outside atmosphere. Some people do install a one-way valve on the fuel line to the carb, but it wasn't stock that I'm aware of.

On the timing belt cover, I vaguely recall that later models had a metal shield on the rear face of the front cover, and that the metal shield came in two or more pieces. Take a look at the pictures on this webpage (and the 2 preceding ones) and see if you can identify what you have, and perhaps you can zoom in and see where the bolt holes are.

You might also be thinking of the fuel pressure regulator that is part of the fuel rail.

On the timing cover, I think you may be referring to the INNER timing belt cover? That sits up against the front of the engine, completely encloses the timing belt (ridiculous overkill) and has usually been removed (and NEVER replaced) on most cars. It is one piece, metal, and only can come off I believe if the Crank Pulley comes off.

Actually, multipiece, but just as Roller states, it is 'overkill', is usually removed, and the crankshaft nut must be removed to remove the 'tins'. I'm quite glad that I did, for a couple of reasons,...timing belt can be replaced, in the future, without removing the nut again,...for one!
In any case, welcome and best of luck with your new-to-you car!

Thanks for clarifying, my car already had it removed when I got it. (Thank God).
