What Combination?

Post by ROOK1 »

I currently have a '71 with a 1608 stock intake and 28/36 DHSA 2 carb. I have a '75 parts car with an 1800, stock intake and 32 ADFA 2 carb.

Do I put the whole 1800 setup in the '71 or intake and carb or carb only? What would be a good setup?

The 1800 motor is NOT proven to run but turns freely by hand. I am planning a carb rebuild no matter which on I go with.

Thanks for the input.

Updated existing carb info.

I'd suggest getting the 1800 engine running (or not), and re-evaluate at that time.

The 1608 block and head will have a higher compression ratio than the 1800 block and head, however the 1608 will have an obviously lower displacement. Those two factors may even out, I don't know. The easiest improvement would be to clean up the 1800 intake manifold by blocking off uncecessary ports and install the 1800 manifold with the 32 ADFA carb onto the 1608 motor.

Considering the unknown condition of the 1800 engine, it would be wise to give it a good checkup of the lower end. Check the bearings and clearances. Check the thrust washers, pilot bearing, and oil pump. If the starter is installed you can do a quick compression check, just make sure the engine is securely mounted to something or you could have a 300 pound hunk of metal rolling around your garage floor.

If the higher compression of the 1608 evens out with the larger displacement of the 1800 then it may not be worth it. But save the 1800 in case the 1608 ever breaks. Also the heads and blocks are not interchangeable.

Thans for the relplies.

Matt. I didn't even think of swapping the head. So that is not an option? I think I will go with the intake and carb and save the 1800 for when I have some play money. ;)

Just trying to get my winter projects in order.

I have been trying to map out this project and I noticed that the throttle cable is run differently on the '71 1600 vs the '75 1800 and is much longer on the '75. Is 1800 intake/carb swap even a possibility for my '71 1600? What else do I need to know?

The acc linkage is different between the two models. The 71 uses a rod linkage and the 75 uses a cable. I don't know if the 32 ADFA has the throttle lever in the same place as your 28/36 DHSA. You could modify the linkage or just install your old carb onto the single port intake.

The 1608 has a larger front cooling port compared to the 1592/1756 (1800) head, so I'm not sure if they're interchangable in the direction you want to go (i.e., 1608 head on a 1800 block). I know I was advised not to put a 1592 head on my 1608 block to replace my worn out head (I ended up rebuilding the stock one instead).
