Carb and Hose Questions

Got under my hood for the first time today - just getting my fingers dirty a little for the first time with the Spider. Anyway, here's what I found, and my questions.

The first set of pics are of the carb. Just want to know if anyone sees anything that looks amiss, or like it is missing anything. I know that I'm missing one of the threaded posts that hold the air cleaner on. Actually two holes are stripped, so only two posts are holding it on anyway. I looked over Brad Artigue's docs, and will do so in more detail in days to come, but wanted to get feedback from some of you who are familiar with what you are looking at.

These pics are where the pipe that comes out of the air cleaner is bolted down. Notice that it is only bolted on one side, and the threaded post is gone from the other side. Is this anything that I need to be concerned about?

This last pic is of the underside of the air cleaner. There are two hoses attached here, the larger one holds on pretty firmly, and the smaller one just slips on - not tightly at all. I was surprised it stayed on at all, but it must be sitting in a spot where there is nothing pressing it to move. Question is what are each of these hoses, and should they be attached with clamps, or should I just leave them as they are?

WoW! Looks pretty clean to me. The large hose on the underside is from the crankcase vapor separator. There should be a vacuum hose that connects to the side of the same place the large hose connects to. If the vacuum hose is loose you might replace it. It's a great idea to replace every hose under the hood on a car of this age. Just make sure you replace one hose at a time and take pics for reference so you don't get lost. As long as you have 2 studs holding the filter base on you are good I'd say, nothing to worry about. I think the pipe you are referring to is the warm air pipe. There's no issue there, one bolt should hold it securely. This pipe is lost on many cars. How's it running? That's the real issue!

I'm kind of anal about this type of stuff, it needs all the studs that hold the air cleaner assembly on. It needs all the bolt/nuts that it came from the factory with. The engineers would have loved to use less parts.....but they chose to use what they did to make the car dependable and safe.
Think about your wheels, you could probably get by with two lug bolts, but would it really be a good idea??

My problem is that two of the holes are stripped. I suspect I could scrounge up the posts and nuts, but the posts won't hold in the holes. Do you know of any way to rectify the stripped holes, or would I need to buy a new carb?

Since the studs are opposing its better than if they were on the same side. However that stock air cleaner is pretty heavy and could over stress the remaining studs, or worse initiate a crack in the carb housing, although rare. An aftermarket "lunch box" would be much lighter and easily held on by just two studs. Good thing is the striped holes can easily be drilled out and tapped to the next larger size.

the stock air cleaner has to be retained for emission testing. The holes can be heli-coiled or oversize studs can be threaded in.
As for the hot air pipe, vibration will cause one single stud to fail at some point

Mark,

I don't suppose I could pick up a couple of studs from you (had to read that twice after I wrote it). I'd need one for the air cleaner mount and one for the hot air pipe mount. I assume that I just remove the bolt in the head cover and replace it with the stud for the pipe.
