New coil, New backfire

Post by JimM »

My car was developing a miss so I pulled the plugs to check and clean if needed. Everything looked good so they went back in and I tried to start it. No way! Checked for spark--none. Check coil-juice in nothing out. Easy fix, put in a new coil, started car and it ran great (solved the miss). When the automatic choke cut out the engine started backfiring and running very rough. Waited a day, and tried again, same results. All hoses appear to hooked up in the right spots. Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I work at night so I will always be a little behind on answering you ( I work on the car in the late afternoon before I go to work)

I would check the hoses for cracks or leaks. Also see if the carb might have become loose. What happens if you hold your hand over the choke?

Is it backfiring through the carb or exhaust pipe?

Is it backfiring through the carb or exhaust pipe? It is backfiring thru both, but the major is thru the carb. It just burbles thru the exhaust. Also the hoses are in good shape.

It sounds like a vacuum leak to me, but I had the same problem when my rotor button came apart inside the cap. Are you still running the points distributor?
