2L head resurfacing

2L head resurfacing
I have a 2L engine I am planning to put together. The head has a gouge or pit the looks like it might have been droped on something it is through the circle mark left by the old head gasket. I am thinking of having the head resurfaced to get the head smooth. What is the maximum material that can be safely removed from a head? I thought I read somewhere it is not a recommended procedure to mill these heads.

they can be milled, but part of the problem is determining if the head has been resurfaced previously. Fiat made a cc gauge that dealers had in the tool package. That gauge is inserted into the combustion chamber to determine head thickness.
Unless the nick is only 008-010 deep, you'll probably have to get the head welded, then resurfaced.

Mark thanks for the quick responce. Also, thank you for all your support in the chatrooms. I have another head but I would prefer to use the damaged one. I will measure the cylinder depth on both and decide to resurface or not. If I decide to try I think I'll take 0.008 off and see what it looks like. This head came off an engine with 53,000 original miles valves and seats look great.
