Fuel Pump 78 spider 1800

How possible is it to install the fuel pump incorrectly? I believe the pump to be good and I can suck fuel through the line but I am not getting fuel through the pump and I wonder if I could have installed it incorrectly as I have put the engine back together. Is there way of telling right from wrong with this? psg

right side up and upside down are the only two possible ways....so i suspect you did right side up. without seeing your installation, can't be sure from here.

where is your fuel pump? Before or after the pump?

Did you pull the pickup unit in the tank and clean the filter at the end of the sender?

does your oil in the crankcase reek of fuel?

No the fuel does not taste good but it does have a familiar burn each time I do it thinking I can stop quick enough.....really fueled me this time.

Did you mean to ask if the filter is before or after the pump? The filter is between the carb and pump. Didn't think to check the oil.

Didn't do anything with the sender end since the fuel flowed so easily, into my mouth, I thought would be a sufficient test. I will go back and start at that end.

The Haynes book talks about being able to get the lever on the pump in the wrong place but I didn't see that as a real possibility unless I tried harder to make it fit that way but I am wondering if it could be a problem but it seems like it would make a racket when the engine turns over if that were the problem. thanks. psg

Two things: There should be a phenolic insulation spacer about 1/2 inch thick between the pump and the block. The pump lever MUST be on the top side of the auxilary shaft. If you push the pump straight in and install it, the actuating lever is probably on the bottom of the shaft. Try tilting the pump down with the lever up when you reinstall it. You should feel some resistance and the pump will want to lean out when installing the bolts.

Blech... yes, i meant fuel filter between pump and carb. good place for it. I could not tell by your first post.

Insulator is there and no fuel in the oil so I will reinstall following the directions. I tend to believe that it is under the shaft considering your explanation. thanks. psg

as I recall the lever goes below the aux shaft. You could have a worn lobe on the aux shaft

Well I just got fuel to the carb. Not sure what made the difference, could have been a partially blocked fuel line, I may have installed the pump wrong but one more step done. thanks. psg
