spun crank bearing

Post by mdrburchette »

Ron's been tearing down a 1608 for us to rebuild for our Lemons racer. Everything looked extremely clean on this engine until he got to the crank bearings. It seems to have spun the center bearing. Is this a common thing? The car has been sitting in the weather since 1986 but when I started stripping it, I noticed several odd things, such as brand new dry rotted Good Years and new brakes. When we separated the tranny, we found a new clutch had been installed and I can tell the starter had been replaced before it got parked.

main bearing or rod bearing? I'd say it would be very odd to spin either center bearing. It's usually the one farthest from the oil pump that fails

It was actually the center main bearing. I didn't think to take pics before I took it to the machine shop but I guess it's possible some trash blocked the oilway and caused the damage. All the other bearings look practically brand new except the farthest one from the oil pump. It showed a slight scoring.
Luckily, I've found some oversized main bearings from a vendor and the guy at the machine shop says he can machine the crank.
