Chinese MGs coming to the US

Post by So Cal Mark »

Nanjiig Auto, the co. that bought MG Rover, is planning on building the MG TF roadster and coupe in Okla beginning in 2008. The plan is to relaunch in the UK in 2007, then expand into the US with the full line of MGs.

Mark:

It would be good to see the MG marque revived. However, I wouldn't expect the result to approximate what most US MG enthusiasts are interested in. When I think of MG I think of the old TC, TD, TF, A and B. The newer TFs resemble modern Japanese iron in all respects and hold no interest for the "wind in the face" MG enthusiast. I recall when the first MGA came out and we thought that Lord Nuffield had abandoned us! The MGA was simply too "modern" and like everything else! Then, the MGB actually had "roll up windows" (unacceptable). Now, of course, the MGA and MGB are accepted by all MG enthusiasts but the new TFs, NEVER!

Yes, but try and sell a new car these days without the conveniences and perf and you'll find a miniscule market. Remember, MG Rover went bk. While there are nostalgia fans out there, there are alot more people that want modern cars. I just thought it was cool that the marque was being revived. Who knows, maybe we'll have Chinese 124 Spiders in the future

I have serious reservations about anything built by the Chinese. I feel they have a long way to go in the quality control department :? ...J.D.

I'm not too sure the cars built in the UK were subjected to the ultimate quality control either  And, they are going to build them in Okla with good ol' US labor

Cant imagine a car w air bags and no windows. I heard a few years ago the average car has 36 modules or computers. Ill take the elec ignition, fuel inj, but all the rest is crap. Problem is, you just can not build a simple car anymore.

We all know that it's impossible to build an MG-TC, Jaguar XK120 or Mercedes 300SL because of the safety regulations today. Morgan held out the longest. However, that's what keeps the price of the remaining examples so high.

This is true...and after all...I don't have to buy the thing...but scaring the hell out of a salesman on a test drive might be fun  !!...J.D.

Good luck getting that test drive.

I sure hope Oklahoma did not give away the farm to get that production plant in their backyard. I am personally sick and tired of giving our jobs, our productivity, and our profits to the dang Chinese. Steel prices are just now starting to settle down after the drain to Bejing. Tool & die workers may never get their jobs back from "the mainland". Wake up America !! How many more jobs, how much more profit do we "owe" to the underdeveloped world? What else do we "owe" to those who wanted nothing to do with us in the past? Why do I have to sacrifice for them?

And, just because it says MG on the badge, does not make it an MG. Wait long enough, pay the right price and you get to put whatever name you want on anything. Does not mean it is the same product.[/u]

an article in the LA Times Business section said the Nanjing execs are still negotiating with Okla indian tribes for placement of the factory. Seems that they wouldn't be subject to many US taxes if the factory is on indian land (sovereign nation, remember)

I agree with you Mike. We just agreed to pay millions of dollars to get Dell to build a factory here in Forsyth County to provide 500 jobs. The problem is we have lost thousands of jobs to overseas manufacturers. The corporate bigwigs have no qualms about moving their factories for hosiery and furniture to third world countries to fatten their pockets.
