oil in cams

Post by scotty356 »

I was replacing the vacuum advance and I noticed when the distributor was pulled that the oil was almost overflowing from the hole. Is this normal, I thought the oil drained back into the pan?
Thanks

Yeup the oil is supposed to go to the pan,however... Perhaps the car is at a bit of an angle, obvious I know. I saw a picture in a post where the owner had drilled holes in the cam towers between the cam supports I think but not really sure, allowing quicker oil return to the pan. My engine seems to have a very slight tilt backwards, perhaps an illusion I don't know but if I'm taking the dist. out I'll wait a bit if I have run the engine and have a few rags around the dist hole.

that level is normal. I fairly popular mod is to enlarge the return holes and put holes in the dams to have more oil return to the pan. HOWEVER, the valve springs are cooled by having oil around them. If you reduce the level in the towers, you could increase the possibility of valve spring failure
