Smog/Air pump working?

Post by barnesjtsl »

I have finally gotten my air pump on. I checked that the pump is working and it is pumping out a good amount of air.

My question. The air flow goes from the air pump to the check valve with a tee connection in the middle that goes to the check valve and the air cleaner. It seems that an excesive amount of air is just going to the air cleaner and then logically through the engine. The car runs just as good as before, but it maks a very small amount of noise as the air rushes into the air cleaner.

Is this normal, or is my check valve not working properly? Does the majority of the air from the air pump just run through the engine, or should more of this air be going through the check valve and into the exhaust system?

Thanks,

John B

if the pump has been missing for some time, the air injection rail may be completely plugged with carbon. That would force all of the air into the air cleaner

Thanks So Cal Mark,

I don't have an air injection rail. I should probably have stated my year of Spider (1979). Below is an image of the air pump system I have.

Any other thoughts?

I would guess you have a California emission engine. Long gone are my reed valves, but I never had a pump on my 79. You probably have a control valve or diverter valve to control the air flow. The AIR valves on the engine are one way as to keep the exhaust in the engine, and the system ports into the air cleaner as sort of a muffler system. If you do not absolutly need this system, loose it! Metric oil pan plugs will work for replacment of the valves on the head. Hope I helped a little???
