1981 spider stalls when i coast in neutral

Post by coolwhip2000 »

Hey all,
New to the fiat club. Just bought it on friday. Here's my problem. I start the car up fine let it warm up a bit before driving. As soon as I pop it out of gear into neutral to coast to the stop sign/light it stalls on me. Then when I go to start it back up I need to give it a little gas to get it to start and not stall again. If I take my foot off the gas it stalls. Once i get moving again she is great. So right now I fear intersections. Any suggestions. Also I am a verice novice mechanic so extra details would be appreciated.

the easy solution is don't coast up to stop lights.
The next step would be to make sure the idle speed is correct, and make sure the idle cutoff solenoid is connected and working

Would I have an idle cutoff solenoid on an '81?

I would look at the Throttle Position Sensor, it may not be registering the correct position to the CPU.

no solenoid on an 81, overlooked the year since I hadn't had that morning coffee yet. Check the air intake boot for any cracks and make sure the air flow meter flap doesn't stick
