Coolant Tee orientation?

Post by eddy314 »

I took off my top coolant hose tee to change timing belt on my 79 2000 w/carb. Noticed that it has a wide open side and a restricted opening side. Which way does it go back on?

I also just wnet through this as I didn't notice it until after I had removed the T AND pulled out both the plug and temp sensor for cleanup. I decided that the reistrictor side goes toward the radiator with my thought being I ALWAYS want full flow when water is recircing through the engine (engine, closed thermostat, T , engine flowpath) and I want it restricted to make sure flow is slow enough through the radiator to allow for proper heat transfer.

Some one who KNOWS jump in.

The restrictor goes toward the thermostat, ie. toward the passenger side.

Really? So it wants to restrict the flow when coolant is NOT passing through the radiator and allow full flow when it is? Is that to force flow toward the radiator in any mid-position of the thermostat? If so I need to swap mine around. Can someone else verify this?

Since I haven't noticed any restrictor on my "T", I can't tell you how it goes, but I feel confident you can trust what Csaba says.

restrictor does indeed go towards the t-stat as Csaba wrote

Thanks all, it would make sense once the engine is fully warmed up and the stat is open, that you would want full flow to the radiator for max cooling. Next issue: I tested my thermostat in a pot on the stove and it didn't start to open up till 195F, and fully open at 205F. Is this OK, or should I get a new one? Also, parking the car on an uphill incline helps to burp the air out of the system.

Well crap, 50/50-90 (50/50 guess you get it wrong 90% of the time)! I'll be turing mine around tonight.

I am just putting my 78's cooling system back together and after reading this thread I found that one of the old hoses had a molded in restriction to flow. The tee does not have a built in restriction. The replacement hoses I got from IAP do not. Is this really any kind of an issue?

I don't think it would be an issue. Since the restricted path is used when the thermostsat is closed, its probably there to assist in the warm up of the engine in cold weather. After the stat opens up it doesn't go that route anymore. So the real test would be how long it takes to warm up if you start it in very cold weather.

That makes good sense. Here in the Seattle area we really don't get super cold anyway and it's not ready to be a daily driver quite yet. Thanks for the feedback.
