Installing fender flares

Post by MNspiderman »

So I got my abarth flares today finally after a long wait. Anyways. How are you suppose to install fiberglass fender flares? They have nothing at all to mount with. I personally would like a small black trim piece between the body and fender flare, like a defined line like a bolt on type if possible. But that takes away mounting possibilities. The ones I got look just like these ones here. The ones i got are just hollow as i suspected but curious to how people have mounted them in the past.

Can you post a pic of the flares up close so we can see what is there to glue to or if you are going to have to apply fibreglas to adhere them. I am curious.
Thanks

Here are some pictures of fender flare installation I found on a Polish site. These seem to be the "standard" Abarth flares, i.e. thin and no attachment points. I bought mine from C.Obert & Co. and they look like the ones pictured.

This is a link to that site: http://www.youngtimer.pl/board/viewtopi ... d=5667&p=1

That looks crappy, I think you would be better off using the newer body panel adhesives. So strong that the current Corvettes use it on certain panels with no fasteners. Just use masking tape to hold it in place till it dries.

Wow - look at that black hood and deck lid. No vents or rally light bulges, and yet somehow it looks amazingly good. Scandalous.

On my Volumex they're bolted through the inner flange. Doesn't this work?

Thanks for the replies. So in your opinion don't you like the look of "bolted on" with a distinctive line separating the fender flare from the body or do you like the fender flare smoothed in, bondo'd and it looks like a factory part of the car. I love the separate piece look myself. But thats probably because I want my flares black and the car a different color. I don't like just painting the wheel well arches black. even though it does look nice sometimes. I don't mind the flares permanent, I just like the distinctive line/ridge separating the two.

Jimb, I think the ones he has do not have an inner flange, just the arch (outer section) only. I could be wrong...

Great photo of your Volumex by the way.

Yep, I have mostly just an arch and a small inner flange that I dont think would reach the wheel well lip

Thanks...but it wasn't intended to be a great photo, I simply ran out to the garage a snapped a quick pic when I saw this thread and thought it might help.

Cheers,

I think the rivets look fine. Period correct. A set of volumex flares and spoiler would be killer though.

I would glue them, which should allow you to keep the 'ridge look' in the fashion of the actual Abarth Rally car. Keep us updated, I'm sure there are several of us looking to perform the same modification (myself included).

Looks like that Volumex is sitting in someone's kitchen. How did you talk your wife into that?

After I sold my last toy (a BMW) I sat around a lot, dranks some beers and watched a lot of sports...that kind of thing.
So, when I told her I was thinking of getting another toy to work on, she helped my redo the garage!
