Another Burnt Alternator / Starter wire

Post by SLOSpider »

I am working on a 1975 Fiat Spider and like usual fixing someone else's poor electrical and mechanical repairs.
I just got this car and was doing the Timing belt and hoses etc... and noticed my harness looked a bit bubbly so I decided to open her up. There was a large black wire burnt to a nice crisp and starting to take others around it for its ride to eternal flames and damnation. As everyone has found most of the wiring diagrams are a joke. So I traced it to the starter through the firewall across the bottom of the dash to the passenger side, and out to the alternator. The somewhat good 1976 wiring diagram I found here did show the 3 black wires coming off the Alternator, one to the fuse, one to the switch and one to the starter. The other black wires were fine with no damage seen to there covers.

However tonight I decided to remove the starter end and see what size wire and eyelets I would need. After stripping back all the tape I found a burnt up 4 wire connector that already had, some electrical engineer, the black wire cut out of it and merely twisted together (and people blame Fiat for the wiring). That was the one that was toasted.

I found the following from the connector to the starter:
One brown wire and One Red wire connected to an eyelet to the starter
One red wire coming out if connector - cut off and not connected?
Black wire taken out of harness, twisted and taped and eyelet to starter

On the other side of the connector I found that both the red wires were now simply connected together via spade terminals with a factory plastic cover? What is this about?

On the last note the Exciter wire seems to have been replaced via a wire that was run through the throttle hole in the fire wall to the switch. Pics below and any help about those 2 RED wires and what the real exciter wire color is would be helpful.

My plan is to run a heavy gauge wire from the Alternator across the firewall and to the starter in its own loom. Thanks Brian

Sorry the pics must be a bit big and were cropped down via the board. I am also planning on eliminating that 4 wire connector and run new wires and eyelets to the starter once I find out what is going on with the 2 Red wires hooked together. Brian

Any Idea on the Red wires tied together. Seems it was a factory thing as the connection was covered by a white plastic clip on cover?

Ok so here is what Im thinking. I will run a new heavy gauge wire from the alternator to a power block on the drivers fender well then from there I will run a wire to the starter and also back to the switch and the #1 fuse position, eliminating the ones used off the alternator to keep the wire length shorter. I plan on eliminating the 4 wire connector to the starter and splice it the wires direct.

I removed the cowl to clean out some debris and check the wipers as they did not function. Found passenger shaft frozen so I used some penetrating oil and got her free. Cleaned and lubed all the pivot points and tested the motor and it worked. Silicone the grommets to keep water out and replacing the washer hoses. I may try to install some screen uner the vents to keep the large debris and leaves out while I have it apart.

Any other suggestions?

So I am wanting to finish the job someone started in removing the rest of the un needed smog related baggage. Im going to single points and I dont have an electric fuel pump ( not sure if it ever did but there is wires in the back like maybe it did at one time ). My questions is about the Relays. By using the so called wiring digram I traced down all but 2 relays Im not sure what the are for. One is behind the Horn relay in the white socket with 3 middle wires to it and then the blue socket that has a wire running over to the first questioned relay. Any ideas what they might be used fore? Only 3 middle terminals in each one. Pics:

Also have a spare Pink wire that is hot when key is on, And correct me if Im wrong but the Gray/Red stripe is to the carb switch which is also hot key on:

And some teaser progress with the wiring and grease fight:

Ok so not many electrical Guru's out here I see....Im pressing forward and today I played with removing the carpet and fixing stereo wiring. I got side tracked and almost finished the passenger side with just a few more steps to button her up. Now for the driver side and that mess of relays! I did manage to fix most of the brake fluid damage to the paint although Im haveing a tough time finding the right red paint to match closer. Some before, after and during pics:

Here you can see the new heavy gauge ground wire I ran from the trans bolt to the fender well, removing all the paint first and bolting it in. The other covering is the new 8 gauge wire that was burnt up going from the starter to the Alternator.
