Loud Banging Noise in rear end
Loud Banging Noise in rear end
Finally got my '78 spider out of the garage last weekend. After about 80 hours of replacing all brakes, calipers, routers, pads and cables. New Rota wheels and tires, and, the installation of new 32/36 DFAV carb from Mark, out in Cali. With the usual scrapping, painting and undercoating over the long winter we had in the northeast. Sucker started right up. I'm happy! After about 2 miles of carb adjustment and breaking in of the new brakes, IT HAPPENED! BANG, BANG, Bang! What the...? Loud banging, which seems to happen once every tire rotation coming from the back. Thank goodness I was only 1/4 mile push from my garage I keep it in. In neutral, it is a noticeable clicking, but in gear it is loud banging. Nothing visually wrong (brakes, etc.). I haven't jacked it up yet. Too upset.
Anyway, I read (Clicking Noise In Rear End) on March 09, 2010, MNspiderman said he broke a ring gear tooth.- Sounds about right. How would I check for this and, any other ideas?

Re: Loud Banging Noise in rear end
Check the fasterners holding the brake calipers and any other parts associated with the brake refresh. Maybe something was not quite tightened, and worked its way loose. If so, here's hoping that you found it before it tore anything up!

Thanks! In a way I hope your right. Thought I was thorough with the brake job, but you never know.

That's great! Thank you. So, it is not the brakes that I know of. I put it on jacks, and the wheels spin freely with my hand. Now, when I start it, and put it in gear (slowly let out the clutch), there is a loud banging, again, which seems each revolution. I just can't tell where exactly it is coming from. The shaft sounds like it is hitting something hard, but this problem is out of my league. 2 mechanics in the area won't touch it. I'm still searching. I was all set to meet you all for breakfast, but I'd have to get flat bedded. P.S. I'm in Bradley Beach.

HI Jack,
Well, we are pretty much down the street from each other, but I'm afraid I'm not much of a mechanic. I can't offer much more than moral support.
Let's see what the smart guys suggest. Chin up, whatever it is, its fixable. George and Ralph both just bought parts cars so maybe they'll have what you need.
Hope we can get together soon. Get to Pete & Elda's much?

Re: Loud Banging Noise in rear end
Start with checking your wheel bolts. If they are too long they can hit the face of the bolts for the rear axle bearing carrier or the carrier itself.
The Universal joints could be bad.
The Guibo could be failing.
The center drive shaft bearing could be bad
The four bolts from the drive shaft to the rear axle could be loose.
Rear wheel bearings
Long trailing arm bolts, bushings or mounts
Short trailing arm bolts, bushings or mounts
I would jack it up and have the rear axle supported by jack stands under the long arms mount to the axle with the full weight of the car on it so it if something else is the problem you will know it.
Get someone to turn the opposing wheel in the forward direction (clockwise on the left and counter clockwise on the right) with the transmission in neutral. If it makes the noise you should be able to find the side its on pretty easily. Turning the parts by hand keeps the amount of energy low (ie not 80hp turning the wheels/parts) so you can be under there and not be in too much danger.
While its up in the air you can check the other various parts of the driveline.

unfortunatly you might have overlooked one horrable problem, ring and pinion failure

Wow, haven't checked this in a while, because I found a German Mechanic willing to look at it in BB. And sure enough it is a broken Pinion Gear. But, it's been sitting there for a while. Says he can't find the parts. Don't think he is trying too hard. Trouble is the '78 rear end is split between early and late '78. I had Vicks auto in Texas give him a
call. They seem to have what he needs, but again I'm waiting. I'll get more info soon.
And love Pete and Elda's. Vicks isn't bad either. Just had a fix last night.

You are correct! Ouch. Seems it is hard to find the exact parts, but I'm hopeful.

Hi Jack.
Hopefully I will have my 1980 back from the body/paint shop in time for Italian Car Day in Philly. June 13th. Keep us up to date on your project. Hopefully you can make it with your Fiat on the 13th. If the Spider can't make it you can jump in with one of us. Breakfast and a car show. Can't beat that with a stick George

Re: Loud Banging Noise in rear end
is yours a "chunk" type or a "spicer" type, meaning does the rear end have a cover that bolts on the back, or does the "pumpkin" remove from the front?

Again, I'm 60 miles away, and it is with the mechanic. But he says it is an early '78 model. I have him calling Vicks Auto in Texas. They seem to be knowledgeable and have the parts. Prob just replace the punkin (pumpkin). I've seen it spelled both ways. In any case I'm heading down on Friday, to add my new "spider badges" from Jim Ellis in Canada, and crawl under to look at the differential just for my own education.
In the mean time I discovered this very cool and retro explanation of the differential from like the early 40's. Check this out:

I'm pushing the mechanic as hard as I can without being a pest. I'm dying here! But, one day this will all be behind me.
